Using the Neva Highway becomes a habit: since the opening of the final section of the Neva Highway (Tosno – St. Petersburg), vehicle traffic has been growing monthly and on some days it already reaches the planned targets for 2020: 20,000 vehicles per day. Over the three winter months, more than 1.3 million vehicles drove along the sections of M11 Highway from Myasnoy Bor to St. Petersburg. 68% of them are cars. Almost 70% of drivers use a transponder to travel. About 20% of traffic was detected on the“Ring Road - Sofiyskaya” route in both directions.
Every month, more than 400 thousand cars travel along the Neva Highway through the section from St. Petersburg to Myasnoy Bor. During the holidays, there is an increase in traffic: M11 has already become a full-fledged alternative for trains and airplanes, making it easier for tourists to access the Northern Capital. For instance, in the course of the winter holidays, the traffic intensity on some days grew by 20% compared to the monthly average. Moreover, the share of freight vehicles on those days did not exceed 10% of the total traffic. The maximum traffic was detected on December 30, when 20,548 vehicles drove through the section from St. Petersburg to Myasnoy Bor, and the minimum was on January 1 (7,706 vehicles).
The M11 section from the Ring Road to the ramp to Kolpino and Sofiyskaya Street, which operates as an intercity highway, has become particularly popular. Residents of the suburbs use it to avoid the traffic jams on M-10 Highway. Over the three winter months, more than 236,000 passenger cars have traveled to and from the city using this route. This is 18% of the total M11 traffic from St. Petersburg to Myasnoy Bor (near Veliky Novgorod).
Rush hours at the toll plaza at km 679 (opposite the Expoforum) are from 8:00 to 9:59 a.m. in the direction towards St. Petersburg and from 5:00 to 6:59 p.m. in the direction towards Moscow. 1/5 of all cars passing here per day are registered during these periods of time. It is interesting that on Friday evening, from 5:00 to 7:59 p.m., the inbound traffic in the Moscow direction at the same toll plaza makes up one third of the total number of cars; probably, “business travelers" are added: those who work 5-day “shifts” and leave the second Russian capital after their working week.
More and more drivers are using a transponder. In January, 69.4% of cars traveled with a transponder, while in February this figure was already 73.2%. Transponders save a lot of time as they enable drivers to pass through toll plazas without stopping, and on some routes they ensure discounts of up to 40%.
